Storing data on the URZ's backup servers can prevent data loss if a harddrive has been damaged or if files have been deleted by accident.
By default, the previous version of every file is also stored for a certain period. After the first complete backup, only changes that occured since the last backup will be transmitted. This incremental storage process saves time and reduces the network load. All transmitted data is first stored in a disk pool and later moved to the tapes located in the tape library.
This service is available for all work-related devices (PCs, laptops, servers) which are registered in one of the URZ's central directories.
To be able to use this service, you need to register and install the client software. The client usually performs the backup automatically, but it is also possible to perform a backup manually or via a script.
