23 September 2024 - Carrier and Training IT Specialist Training at the URZ Successfully Completed
Once again this year, two new employees have successfully completed their professional training as IT specialists in system integration at the URZ. We congratulate our new IT specialists from the class of 2024 and are delighted that both will continue their professional careers in university IT.
During their three-year training, prospective IT specialists familiarize themselves with the entire range of services that the University Computing Centre has to offer students, employees and researchers. Ahmad Azizi and David Schöffmann are thrilled to have earned their IHK certificates at the end of June, especially as the start of their training was affected by the pandemic and its associated restrictions. Initially, training had to take place remotely, but fortunately it was soon possible to work on site in all service areas and groups at the URZ as usual, and the trainees were also able to get to know and work with their colleagues in person.
“I can say that I really enjoyed the training: great supervision, a nice environment and I was able to learn so much. What makes the training at the URZ special is the opportunity to learn about many different technologies across all service areas. Compared to commercial enterprises, the URZ covers so much more ground.”

“I thought it was great that we got to know each group and a lot of the colleagues at the URZ and that we were also able to participate in larger events such as the E-Science-Tage. In the course of the training, I realized that I am particularly interested in virtualization environments and data storage, such as Container, Docker or NetApp solutions. That's why I'm keen to develop my skills in my free time, too.”

Over 43,000 members of the university use our services for their work, research and studies. Day-to-day life at a university is just as complex as the needs of its members. As the central IT service provider for the university, the URZ offers nearly 100 IT services, ranging from basic services such as email and storage solutions to research-related services, such as our high-performance computing cluster. Another distinctive feature is that are trainees can acquire skills in both Linux and Windows at the University Computing Centre, as we use a variety of operating systems.
“From the very beginning, I had the feeling that I was drawn more to the Windows environment, and now I'm working in the area of user and domain administration,” says Ahmad Azizi, who works in both Heidelberg and Mannheim. David Schöffman is strengthening the IT team at the Heidelberg University's Medical Faculty Mannheim (IT-MedMa), which has been part of the URZ since 2022. He works in Mannheim in the area of support and service management (SSM) and, together with his colleagues, provides on-site support for the medical faculty's IT infrastructure.
