Service PC Pool at the URZ

Quiet study and work space on the Im Neuenheimer Feld campus

A public PC pool is available in the URZ building (Im Neuenheimer Feld 330), where various IT services as well as study ad research-related software can be used. You can find the PC pool in Room E03, on the same floor as the main entrance. The PC pool also offers the possibility to work with your own computer in a quiet atmosphere on campus.

Access and requirements

The use of the PCs only require a Uni ID or username.

7-Zip

The main function of 7-Zip are: High compression ratio in 7z format with LZMA and LZMA2 compression; Supported formats: packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM; unpacking only: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z; Strong AES-256 encryption in 7z  and ZIP formats; Self-extracting capability for 7z format.

Adobe Reader

Adobe Acrobat Reader DC software is the free global standard for reliably viewing, printing and commenting on PDF documents.

Chrome

Google Chrome is a fast, user-friendly and secure browser from Google.

Citavi

Citavi is a program for reference management and knowledge organization for Microsoft Windows. It is used at universities and colleges for writing term papers and theses, by researchers for authoring scholarly publications and in companies for drafting reports and knowledge organization within teams. Citavi is developed by the company Swiss Academic Software located in Wädenswil near Zürich.

EndNote

EndNote is a commercial reference management software for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X that allows you to search online databanks (e.g. PubMed) and the creation/management of bibliographical databanks.

Firefox

Mozilla Firefox, or simply Firefox, is a free web browser by the Mozilla project.

GIMP

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is a pixel-based graphics program that includes functions for image editing and digital painting of bitmap images. The program is free software and can be used free of charge.

LibreOffice

LibreOffice is a free standard software package for office work (office suite). LibreOffice includes programs for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and creating diagrams. A databank management system and formula editor are also available.

Microsoft Office 2016

A Microsoft Office productivity suite by Microsoft for Windows. The following components are available: Access, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word.

Notepad++

Notepad ++ is a free source code editor that supports several programming languages for use with Windows.

PDF24 Creator

PDF24 Creator is an application software for creating PDF files from any application. PDF24 Creator is installed as a virtual printer via a device driver in the operating system. Then, PDF files can be created from any application that has a print function. The files sent to the virtual printer are used to create a PDF file. To do this, PDF24 Creator employs the free PDF interpreter Ghostscript, which is automatically downloaded as a private instance for PDF24 Creator. 

R

R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphics. R comes standardly equipped with a command-line interpreter with simple command buttons.

Ricoh Printer

The URZ offers a wide variety of printing services. In cooperation with the company Ricoh, we support a campus-wide pool of public printers and copiers and provide multifunction and printing systems for Heidelberg University institutions.

SPSS Statistics

IBM SPSS Statistics software is a modularly built program package for the statistical analysis of data. The Base Edition supports basic data management and comprehensive statistical and graphical analysis using the most common statistical methods. For specialized use, such as conjoint or time series analysis, there are supplemental packages that can be added to the Base Edition.

TeX Live

TeX is a typesetting system with a built-in macro language that reads plain text and font files and creates binary document files that can be printed, displayed or otherwise processed for output by other programs.

TightVNC

TightVNC is a free remote control software package. With TightVNC you can see the desktop of a remote machine and control it with your local mouse and keyboard.

VLC

VLC media player is a portable, free multimedia player for diverse audio, video codecs and file formats as well as DVDs and video CDs; it also supports various streaming protocols and ports for tv tuner cards (e.g. DirectShow and BDA). It can also be used as a server for streaming in unicast or multicast, in IPv4 an IPv6 networks or as a transcoder for supported audio and video formats.

WinSCP

WinSCP (Windows Secure Copy) is a free SFTP and FTP client for Windows. WinSCP copies data between local and remote computers using diverse protocols: FTP, FTPS, SCP, SFTP, WebDAV or S3.

XMind

XMind is a brainstorming and mind mapping software. It is intended to support users with collecting, structuring and visualizing concepts, ideas, course content or projects. In addition to mind maps, you can create organizational charts, Gantt charts, cause-and-effect diagrams, trees and tables. The documents can be shared online. The paid version provides additional functions, e.g. Word, PowerPoint and PDF export.
